  • Adjustable Motorcycle Shock Setup Guide

    Honda SCL500

These adjustable rear shocks are designed specifically for the Honda SCL500 and allow you to tune spring preload and damping to suit different rider weights, riding styles, and road conditions.

A correct suspension setup improves comfort, stability, traction, and overall motorcycle control.

    1. Preload Adjustment (Spring Compression)

Preload determines how much the spring is compressed before riding. It affects ride height and suspension sag.

    Location

The preload adjustment is made using the threaded collar located at the top of the spring.

    Tool

Use the hook spanner tool supplied with the shocks.

    Adjustment

Increase preload (firmer suspension / less sag)
    → Turn the collar clockwise

Decrease preload (softer suspension / more sag)
    → Turn the collar counterclockwise

    Adjustment Method

    1. If possible, place the motorcycle on a rear stand to unload the rear wheel.

    2. Insert the hook spanner into the slots of the preload collar.

    3. Turn the collar in small increments (about ¼ turn at a time).

    4. Always adjust both shocks equally to maintain proper balance.

    Sag Guideline (Recommended)

For road use on the Honda SCL500, a typical setup target is:

Rider sag: approximately 30–35% of total rear suspension travel

This range generally provides a good balance between comfort, grip, and stability.

    2. Damping Adjustment

Damping controls how quickly the suspension compresses and rebounds after bumps or road irregularities.

    Location

The damping adjuster is the large black ridged knob located at the end of the reservoir.

The small silver screw nearby is part of the assembly and is not used for adjustment.

    Important Characteristic

This adjuster does not use click detents.

Adjustment is made through smooth rotation, not indexed clicks.

Because of this, full turns are not equivalent to clicks.

    3. Recommended Baseline Setup

    1. Turn the black adjuster clockwise gently until it lightly seats
      (do not force it).

    2. From this position, turn it counterclockwise approximately 1.5 turns.

This provides a neutral baseline setting suitable for most riders and road conditions on the Honda SCL500.

    4. Fine Tuning

After riding the motorcycle, you can fine-tune the damping in small increments.

Adjust 1/8 to 1/4 turn at a time.

If the rear suspension feels bouncy or unstable after bumps
→ Turn the adjuster slightly clockwise (increase damping)

If the rear suspension feels too stiff or slow to recover after bumps
→ Turn the adjuster slightly counterclockwise (reduce damping)

Always test ride the motorcycle between adjustments.

    5. Safety Recommendation

Suspension setup directly affects motorcycle stability and safety.

If the motorcycle feels unstable or if you are unsure about the correct settings, we recommend having the suspension inspected and adjusted by a qualified motorcycle technician.
